Southport Old Road in Formby will be closed in phases for five and a half months starting this autumn.

The works will enable Scottish Power to install a new 14km 33 KV cable from Formby to Southport as an upgrade to the existing network.

The new cable will add additional capacity to the network required to meet the demanding needs of customers, including the increase in Electric Vehicle (EV) charging.

The works will be carried out between 14th October 2024 and 31st March 2025.

In order to try and mitigate disruption to the main A565, Scottish Power is proposing to route the new cable through Southport Old Road, Formby.

Due to the restrictive widths of the road it will be necessary to complete the works under a temporary road closure.

Works will be undertaken in various phases to ensure that access is always maintained to businesses and property owners.

All costs will be met by Scottish Power Energy Networks.

Sefton Council believes that a temporary road closure of Southport Old Road is the safest option to complete this section of works.

Discussions did take place with Merseyside Police on an alternative route through the Formby Bypass.

However, this proposal would have reduced the lane widths for a number of months. This option was rejected by all parties following a site meeting.
