The doctor who co-founded the Southport Macmillan Centre to provide support to local families whose lives have been affected by cancer has been recognised in the King’s New Year’s Honours.

Dr Graeme Allan, best known for his role as Volunteer Medical Director at the centre, is being awarded a British Empire Medal.

One of his most significant achievements has been establishing a local cancer navigator service, which ensures all newly diagnosed cancer patients in Southport and Formby have a universal offer of access to support including emotional, psychological and lifestyle optimisation through referral from their registered GP.

The centre, at 29 Wright Street in Southport town centre, offers advice, information and support to people affected by cancer, their carers, families and friends; signposting to local services and support groups.
A spokesperson for the Southport Macmillan Information and Support Centre said:

“In 2012 Dr Graeme Allan was able to realise his ambition to open a community-based centre to offer support to people affected by cancer.

“After years of planning and hard work, the Southport Macmillan Centre opened to the public and has gone from strength to strength, still supporting both patients and their loved ones to navigate life after a cancer diagnosis.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Graeme has been recognised in the New Years Honours and been awarded the British Empire Medal for his commitment and dedication to the service.

“This is an honour which is richly deserved – well done Graeme.”

Dr Graeme Allan BEM said:

“It has been a privilege and an honour to be nominated by my colleagues for a British Empire Medal.

“I have been lucky enough to be part of an amazing team, working to improve the care and support available locally to people affected by cancer in Southport and Formby over the last 25 years.

“Co-founding the Southport Macmillan Centre has been one of the highpoints of my clinical career, and to now be mentioned in the King’s New Year’s Honours List for work I have loved being a part of, is, quite simply, the icing on the cake.”
