Southport Bijou Cinema

Christmas arrives at the Bijou Cinema in Southport town centre this week as Too Friendly Theatre performs a three-night production of Jo Landry’s ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’.

It starts a month-long programme of family favourite festive movies at the independent venue.

Based on the classic Frank Capra film, the Too Friendly Theatre play is a little unusual.

A spokesperson said: “It is set in the recording studio of an American radio station, where countless 1940s stars are participating in a live on-air broadcast. This is a radio play, performed live, with you as the audience.

“And we mean live. The actors have their scripts (but we promise they know their lines really), the sound effects are produced live on stage and there are even adverts (of a musical variety) included in the show (live of course!). This is radio as it used to be.”

The classic tale, It’s A Wonderful Life tells the story of George Bailey, a frustrated businessman who, on Christmas Eve contemplates whether life would be better if he never existed. He is visited by an angel, Clarence, who takes him on a journey to prove that his existence is more important than he realises.

“It really is the definitive Christmas story.” Explains director Cliff Gillies who also takes on the role of Jake Laurents, who plays the role of George Bailey in the radio play. “To be shown how important your life really is, on the eve of Christmas is a truly a beautiful tale.”

Jennifer Johnson, who plays Sally Applewhite who takes on the role of George’s wife, Mary Hatch agrees. “Christmas is a time of family when we think about those more important to us. George thinks he doesn’t matter but is made to realise he really does.”

Once again, Too Friendly Theatre will be performing this show at their new home, The Bijou Theatre at the Bijou Cinema. “It’s the perfect venue” continues Cliff, “a hidden Southport Gem, where people can come together and feel the warmth of Christmas and the spirit of the season, whilst enjoying a fabulous night’s fun.”
