The final of The first ever Chester New Comedian of the Year competition took place last night as part of the third annual Chester Comedy Festival.

The competition was sponsored by Concept Mortgages Limited Heswall and was judged by Christian Coventry of Concept Mortgages, Simon Hall of Wirral Life Magazine Emily Ghazarian of Chester BID associate sponsor of the festival and Val Brady of Big Comedy UK which produces the whole festival.

The show was held in Chester Market and we want to thank Karen Bates and Adele Thomas from Chester Market and all of the stall holders involved for opening up after hours to look after our guests, Pastry Pédaleur Crustum Chester and Exotic Booze Club.

Over 100 comedians from all over the UK entered by sending in video clips which were then whittled down to the eight finalists.

Chester Comedy Festival Director Brendan Riley said: “Can I say well done to every act that took part who had travelled from as far as Hastings to perform! This in itself shows great commitment.

“The running order was chosen randomly so in the first half was Aaron Wood from Stockport, Michael Patrick Mannion from Congleton, The Punguin aka Mackerel Donald apparently from the South Pole, James Connell from the Scottish end of Southport. After the interval we had Bexie Archer from Northwich, Lauren Douglin from Hastings, Nick Byard Comedy from Reading and Daman Bamrah from London.

“All of the acts were brilliant considering they had only been performing for a few years and I am sure they have a bright career ahead of them.

“In third place was the very inventive Nick Byard, in second place was the very likable Aaron Wood which was a great achievement as it is never easy to go on at the start and the first ever Chester New Comedian Of The Year Title was awarded to Daman Bamrah.

“Daman’s delivery and professional poise gave him the edge in what proved to be a very competitive final.”

Chester Comedy Festival now continues for another week closing on Thursday 22nd July at Chester Racecourse with the brilliant Rich Hall.
