A car park attendant who saved a much-loved grandad’s life in Southport has been honoured with the Sefton Courage Award sponsored by EFT Group at the 2026 Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards.
Laim Howard walked onto the stage at The Grand in Southport to huge applause as he was presented with his trophy by EFT Group HR Director Kyla Watts.
Liam was hailed as “an absolute hero” after he saved the man’s life – giving his relieved family new memories together.
Liam was on duty at the NCP car park on London Street in Southport town centre, next to Southport Train Station, in October when he stepped in to help the man, who was in distress and trying to take his own life.
He opened the door to the car that the man was in, stemmed the bleeding and comforted him until paramedics arrived.
He then ensured the man was given privacy as medics tended to his wounds.
The man has now fully recovered – and has been able to spend a very happy Christmas and a memorable holiday with his family.
The NCP car parks at London Street and the Promenade in Southport are both operated under the watchful eyes of Liam Howard and Steve Farrington, who have been on hand in recent years to make sure drivers feel safe and to help people with any issues they may have. They are the only manned car parks in Southport.
Liam has worked at NCP for nearly 14 years and has worked with Steven for nearly 10 years.
Together, they have helped many people with a variety of issues – including as life-savers.
The rescued man’s daughter said: “I would like to share a heartfelt story about the bravery, courage and overall beautiful person who helps on a daily basis in his job.
“His name is Liam Howard and he works at the NCP Car Park on London Street in Southport.
“He is an absolute hero and needs to be acknowledged for saving my Dad’s life.”
Liam Howard said: “I’m overwhelmed and honoured with everything that’s happened so far.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the nominations and the life-changing opportunities happening right now.
“Thank you all for your kind words and messages – it truly means a lot. I’m always here to support others too and shall always be myself.
“The Courage Award from Pride of Sefton is more than recognition – it’s a symbol of strength passed from one remarkable person to the next. From Leanne Lucas and Heidi Liddle last year’s winners two women I have the upmost respect for, continuing a legacy that inspires us all. And all those who carried it before them, it represents resilience, compassion, and standing tall when it matters most.”
The 2026 Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards celebrated selfless, talented and courageous people across 13 categories at The Grand in Southport on Friday night (24th April 2026).
The Main Award was won by Queenscourt Hospice founder Dr Karen Groves MBE.
The evening was hosted by former Sky Sports News presenter Fraser Dainton with VIP guests including HM Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside Peter Oliver OBE and Mayor of Sefton Cllr Burns, on one of her final engagements to crown her three busy years as Mayor.
Funds were raised on the night for the ICU Steps charity, which supports patients in intensive care and their families.
The Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards are organised by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group and Stand Up For Southport in association with media partners In Demand Radio with support from Southport BID.
There are 13 categories including Child of Courage, School Of The Year, Community Impact, Charity Champion and more, plus the Main Award.
