Stand Up For Southport Blog by Andrew Brown
Everywhere you go in Southport town centre this year you see building work – and it’s a really promising sign.
If you’re looking for any builders, scaffolders, architects, surveyors or developers in the region, they’re busy at work here.
There is lots to enjoy in Southport already. Many reasons for people to come. But 2025 is a year when it’s about to get a whole lot better.
Builders are working on:
- the new £73 million Events Centre
- improving the Market Quarter area
- the new Southport Enterprise Arcade, which opens this Spring
- on the Debenhams site, which opens this Summer
- at the former Southport Visiter Building
- revamping the old Leo’s Bar; creating a new wine bar and hotel rooms next to and above Connolly’s
- restoring the heritage buildings along Bold Street
- a new owner is now tackling the former BHS / Broadbents site
- hundreds of new homes are coming to Crowland Street and Bankfield Lane.
By the time the Open Golf Championship comes to Royal Birkdale next year, Southport is going to have a real wow factor about it.
All this is going to act as a catalyst for more investment as developers across the UK take notice of the opportunities that exist here – among them, what happens to the area around Ainsdale Beach, and the Waterfront site.
There is more to come. The Garrick and the Wetherspoons Hotel will improve the southern end of Lord Street while the Cove Resort is a hugely exciting prospect for Southport.
While building work is happening, there has never been a more important time to support local businesses in Southport.
They have all been impacted by the tragedy that happened last year. Building work will be temporarily disruptive but they need people to shop local, to eat local; and for people from out of town to come and visit Southport.
Southport BID has lots of activity planned to support local businesses.
Look out for the We’re Going On A Bear Hunt sculptures arriving in the town centre this weekend!
I’m excited to see all these schemes happening in Southport this year. It all bodes well for a positive future.
