Everton Football Club has confirmed that it will host Italian side AS Roma at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium for a high-profile pre-season friendly on Saturday 9 August, with kick-off at 3pm. This fixture will represent the first event at the waterfront stadium to be held at full capacity, following a number of restricted-attendance test events, with all 52,769 seats available to supporters. The match will serve as a key milestone ahead of the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Brian Dawe, CEO at Safe Regeneration (Lock & Quay), said:
“We definitely saw the benefits as a local business in Bootle, with Toffees in the community pub before and after the Test Event. We hope that this will continue into the new season and beyond!”
Cllr Steve Foulkes, Chair of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Transport Committee said:
“As a proud Evertonian myself, I can’t wait to see Hill Dickinson Stadium full for the first time as the club enters a new chapter.
“The new stadium is a massive moment – not just for the club, but for the regeneration of North Liverpool and Bootle – an area which is only going to go from strength to strength in the coming years.
“We want to make sure fans can get to and from matches easily, safely, and sustainably, while keeping disruption to local residents to a minimum.”
Beyond transport, Bootle is undergoing significant regeneration with improvements aimed at enhancing the area’s overall appeal. As part of this ongoing development the area is set to benefit from more open areas, green space, and better links for those visiting the Centre on foot or by public transport.
Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Skills and Employment said:
“Bootle is becoming a key location for fans, offering a seamless and enjoyable matchday experience.
“With outstanding transport links and secure facilities, we’re proud to provide smarter travel options that ease congestion while supporting local businesses.
“As matchday footfall continues to rise, Bootle’s vibrant community of shops, bars, and restaurants is set to see an increase in visitors, showcasing the positive impact of the Hill Dickinson stadium on our local economy.
“This growth is further supported by Bootle’s ongoing regeneration, which is bringing new investment and opportunities to the area. With improved infrastructure, enhanced public spaces, and a focus on sustainability.”
As part of this ongoing transformation, Salt and Tar is set to become a key asset in enhancing the matchday experience, once the main construction works are completed. The venue will be closely linked with Everton fixtures, offering live entertainment, food and drink, and community-focused activities. This will further support economic growth and community engagement at the heart of Bootle.
