A milkman who has worked for Bates Dairy in Southport is enjoying his last milk round today.
Alan Rimmer joined the dairy, based on Stamford Road in Birkdale, in 1980, and has worked for the family-run firm ever since.
In that year, Nottingham Forest were crowned European Cup winners; the Rubik’s Cube was introduced to the world; Jimmy Carter was US President while Margaret Thatcher had her second year as UK Prime Minister; The Empire Strikes Back, the second Star Wars movie, was released; and Bob Paisley’s Liverpool FC won the League title.
A Bates spokesman said: “Alan has worked at Bates Dairy for 40 years this year and today is his last day.
“He has been a stalwart milkman over the past four decades and his son also works for the dairy.
“All the Bates family and your fellow milkmen and milk ladies wish you all the best for your retirement and we hope that you regularly pop your head in to say hello!”
Alan has received best wishes from a number of Bates customers.
Speaking on the Bates Diary Facebook page, Roz Littler said: “Congratulations on your well earned retirement Alan.
Sandy Davies said: “Happy retirement Alan Rimmer, you must have delivered 10-15 million pints in that era and clocked close to 70,000 miles.”
Gary Dicker said: “Congratulations Alan, you managed to stick it out a little bit longer than me! Good luck in your endeavours. All the best.”
Hilary Scott said: “Alan has been my milkman for 37 years. Enjoy your well-earned retirement.”
Glenys Chiselle said: “I am sure you’ll be sadly missed by everyone but just think of those extra hours in bed once your body has adapted. Well done and enjoy your retirement.”
