TWO Southport high schools are due to be rebuilt in a superb boost for local children and families.
On Wednesday night (16th September 2026), Greenbank High won permission to demolish its existing buildings and create a brand new, state-of-the-art school after being given the go ahead by Sefton Council’s Planning Committee.
Funding is coming through the Department for Education’s national School Rebuilding Programme.
And then on Thursday morning (17th September 2026), it was the turn of staff and students at Christ the King Catholic High School and Sixth Form Centre in Birkdale to start celebrating, after the Department for Education confirmed that they are to benefit from a complete rebuild.
Work on the project is already beginning, with surveyors currently on site and early discussions taking place between Christ the King Catholic High School, the Archdiocese of Liverpool and the Department for Education to help shape plans for the development.
Southport MP Patrick Hurley said:
“This is absolutely fantastic news for Southport.
“These are major investments in two of our town’s schools and, most importantly, in generations of Southport children who deserve to learn in modern, first-class buildings.
“I’ve been pushing particularly hard for action at Christ the King, including taking the case directly to ministers, because I’ve seen for myself just how urgently investment is needed. So to see that work now bearing fruit is enormously welcome.
“Alongside the transformation already under way at Greenbank, this represents a huge vote of confidence in Southport and its future. We are talking about serious Government capital investment coming into our town, creating better places to learn, supporting jobs and construction, and leaving Southport with assets that will serve our community for decades.
“But it’s not just the schools. We’ve also had confirmation in the last couple of years about multi-million pound investment across town, from the hospital to the pier, from the water treatment works to the Marine Lake Events Centre. When it comes to the wider regeneration of the town, we are starting to see substantial investment flowing into Southport, in the hundreds of millions of pounds.
“For too long, people here have been used to being told what we can’t have. I want that to change. Southport should be ambitious about its future, and announcements like these show why.
“There is a real sense now that things are moving. We still have a lot of work to do, but I genuinely believe Southport’s best days lie ahead of us.”
