Artist Ruth Ryder reveals stunning first artwork of new concertina book of Wayfarers Arcade in Southport

Artist Ruth Ryder is creating stunning artwork of Wayfarers Shopping Arcade in Southport for a special book called ‘Parade Along The Arcade’ for people of all ages

A talented local artist is creating stunning artwork of Wayfarers Shopping Arcade in Southport. 

Ruth Ryder has also created four vibrant images inside the iconic landmark, which opened in 1898 and celebrated its 125th anniversary last year. 

The images will be compiled within a special concertina book for people of all ages. 

Ruth wowed people with the publication of her first ever art book, Southport Illustrated, last year. 

The work contained scenes of Wayfarers Arcade, along with  various sections of Lord Street, The Grand, The Atkinson, Southport Pier, Silcock’s Funland and Carousel, Churchtown Village, Birkdale Village, Southport Market Quarter, June The Florist, Hesketh Park and more.

Her work in progress – called ‘Parade Along The Arcade’ – currently features scenes of the front of the building; The Engine Room; Remedy at Beales; and Pudding & Pie plus The Hair Lounge. 

Earlier this year Ruth became the latest creative to take up space in The Engine Room.. 

The Engine Room has opened in space on the first and second floors at Wayfarers Shopping Arcade as an ambitious hub for digital workers and creatives.

It is open to anyone with a digital, creative or tech background.

Ruth said: “Whilst working at The Engine Room in Wayfarers Shopping Arcade, I am creating a concertina book, which will contain 16 illustrations – all of the shops and outlets in the arcade. 

“Special edition prints will also be available to purchase at the Engine Room, once my project is completed in a few months’ time. 

“I want to create an upbeat vibe of the arcade full and bustling.

“Each illustration is taking a few weeks to complete. 

“I’m hoping my artwork will help to illustrate what the Wayfarers will become again in the near future, with the Engine Room being at the centre of it all.”

The stunning Grade II Listed Wayfarers Shopping Arcade opened on the Lord Street boulevard in 1898 as one of the North West’s most celebrated shopping arcades.

Open seven days a week, visitors can enjoy a variety of local independent businesses set on two floors.
