MWL NHS Charity, the official charity for Mersey and West Lancashire (MWL) Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, is encouraging people across the local community to get active this March with the launch of ‘Challenge 100 – 100 miles your way’.
This new month‑long fundraising initiative is designed to support our local NHS hospitals including Southport Hospital and Ormskirk Hospital.
The challenge invites participants to complete 100 miles throughout March using any activity they choose, including walking, running, cycling, swimming, or a combination of activities. The flexible format allows miles to be completed at any pace and tailored to suit all ages, abilities, and lifestyles.
Funds raised through Challenge 100 will directly support MWL NHS Charity. Participants can choose to fundraise for the charity’s current appeal, aimed at raising £50,000 for a new day room at the Spinal Injuries Centre, Southport Hospital, or for a specific area of the Trust, such as Breast Care, Children’s, Critical Care, plus many more, allowing donations to be directed to the services most in need.
Janette Mills, Head of Clinical Audit at the Trust explains why she has signed up to take part in Challenge 100.
“I wanted to give myself a real fitness goal to work towards. Having something positive to focus on keeps me motivated, helps me build healthier routines, and gives me that extra push as we head towards summer. It feels good to challenge myself while supporting such an important cause.”
Registration for the challenge is free. All participants will receive a fundraising pack to help track their progress, and those who raise £25 or more will be awarded a free MWL NHS Charity T‑shirt.

Victoria Burrows, Head of MWL NHS Charity said:
“Challenge 100 is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together, get active, and support the incredible work happening across our local hospitals. Every mile and every donation will contribute to providing an enhanced experience for our patients.
“This support makes a real difference – from providing advanced equipment like specialist post‑operative and reconstructive bras for those recovering from surgery, to creating brighter, more welcoming spaces such as vibrant wall murals that comfort and inspire our young patients in paediatrics.”
