The three police officers who were first on the scene at the Southport tragedy last summer and detained the murderer have been praised for saving lives through their bravery.

Sergeant Gregory Gillespie, Constable Luke Holden, and PCSO Timothy Parry were thanked for their actions that day by Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell as they were awarded the National Police Bravery Award 2025.

Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:

“It is with immense pride and deep admiration that I congratulate Sergeant Gregory Gillespie, Constable Luke Holden, and PCSO Timothy Parry on being named national winners at the 2025 Police Bravery Awards.

“Their actions in Southport on the 29th of July 2024 were nothing short of extraordinary.

“First on the scene and faced with unimaginable horror, they responded with instinctive courage, composure, and professionalism.

“They entered a place of chaos and fear, confronting a violent attacker and protecting innocent lives — without hesitation and with no thought for their own safety.

“Their bravery that day saved lives. Their actions brought order to a moment of devastation. And their conduct exemplified the very highest standards of policing.

“This award is a fitting and powerful recognition of their heroism. But it is also a reminder of the values that define them—and define Merseyside Police  – courage, compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

“On behalf of the people of Merseyside, I offer my heartfelt thanks and congratulations.

“Sergeant Gillespie, Constable Holden, and PCSO Parry — you are a credit to this force and to the communities you serve.”
