Mick and Ruth Harrison are embarking on an emotional and inspiring journey across the country, walking the entire Trans Pennine Trail in memory of their dear friend, Sally-Anne Stanbrook.

They began their trek at 1pm today (Friday 6th June 2025) from Queenscourt Hospice in Southport.

The couple are making their way along the coast-to-coast trail that stretches all the way to Hornsea on the east coast, passing through Liverpool, Manchester, and Hull along the way. They expect the trek to take around two weeks to complete.

Their motivation for this challenge is deeply personal. Sally-Anne was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on 29th December 2024 and heartbreakingly passed away just six weeks later, on 6th February 2025, at the age of 48.

She spent her final days in the care of Queenscourt Hospice, whose support Mick and Ruth are now determined to honour through their fundraising efforts.

“Sally-Ann was an amazing friend – one of the most cheerful and positive people we have ever known,” says Mick.

“She was an incredible wife and soulmate to David, and the most amazing and supportive mum to Max, Taylor and Evie. Ruth and I are walking the Trans Pennine Trail to raise money for Queenscourt Hospice, who cared for her with such compassion in her final days.”

The Trans Pennine Trail is a 215-mile route that connects the Irish Sea to the North Sea, offering a mix of urban, rural and coastal landscapes. It’s a demanding but scenic path, and Mick and Ruth are using every step to reflect on Sally-Anne’s memory and the impact she had on those around her.

All funds raised from their walk will go directly to Queenscourt Hospice, which provides vital care for people with life-limiting illnesses across West Lancashire, Southport and Formby.
