People with an interest in Southport’s heritage are invited to book tickets for a special event starting at the Engine Room at Wayfarers Shopping Arcade in Southport this week.
Conservation builders, DIY-ers, and heritage enthusiasts are welcome to book tickets for the event, Windows With Character – Sash Windows In Southport as part of the 2024 Heritage Open Days initiative.
It will be hosted by Southport Townscape Heritage Project this Thursday, 12th September 2024, between 5pm and 7pm, meeting at The Engine Room (access via West Street, PR8 1NT).
Sash windows are a key part of Southport’s Victorian architecture – from Lord Street’s public buildings to residential streets. This walk and practical demonstration shows why they matter and how to care for them.
The event begins with a walk around the town centre with the Townscape Heritage team to explore how sash windows contribute to Southport’s built heritage, and what happens when they’re neglected or inappropriately replaced.
Following this, there will be a practical demonstration by Gary Houghton of Houghton & Hignett Ltd, local joinery manufacturers and constructors. He will show how a sash window works and what to do if a window is in poor condition. You’ll learn about the mechanism, glazing, tools, and materials for making repairs correctly, and what to do when a window is beyond repair or glazing needs upgrading.
All participants will receive copies of the Guide to Maintaining Sefton’s Historic Homes and the Guide to Improving Energy Efficiency in Sefton’s Historic Homes.
