Spinwell Cycleworks in Southport is closing, as owner Rory James Buckingham gets ready to take on a new challenge.

The shop, on Upper Aughton Road in Birkdale, provides servicing, repairs and supplies.

Local cyclists have given their thanks for the years of service to the local community.

In a statement, Rory said: “It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the closure of Spinwell Cycleworks.

“Since opening in 2016 I’ve endeavoured to serve my local cycling community diligently and it has been an honour to do so. I wholeheartedly thank all the patrons of the business for allowing me to realise a dream and a special thanks to the regulars – they know who they are. I’d also like to thank some of the other cycling businesses in the area for their collaborative support over the years.

“Lastly, without the help and encouragement of my family and friends the entire venture would not have been possible – I will be eternally grateful.

“Fortunately this is a decision I have made on my own terms. I have recently received an opportunity to work within the manufacturing / engineering industry and I’m going to pursue it.

“I’m looking forward to a new chapter of life and to further developing my technical skills in a new field.

“I hope that my message will percolate down to street level and into the various cycling groups of the area.

“I’ve been asked several times already to recommend another cycle mechanic and this is difficult as there just aren’t that many around. However, I recently met Phil of The Bike Repair Shop, Formby while out riding and thought he was great, so maybe give him a shout.

“Unfortunately I can no longer take in work. My last official day at the shop will be Friday 13th September (how ominous) and I encourage wellwishers and protestors alike to come and say hello / goodbye.”

Speaking on social media, Susan Joesphine said: “What a diamond gentleman bike genius you are and your expertise and excellence will be missed in the cycle world, but your life book needs plenty of good chapters. Wishing you the very best you will excel.”

Paul Cargill said: “Good luck, absolute diamond of a guy. You will be amazing at whatever you do.”

The Iron Horses said: “Thanks for helping us when we cycled past on our John’O’Groats to Land’s End in 2019. A great shop and wish you well for the engineering role. Cheers!”
