Craft & Sons, which is halfway through constructing a climbing gym at 339 Lord Street, has commenced renovation work at one of the most eye-catching Victorian buildings in Southport: the Grade II Listed premises at 479/481 Lord Street.
This historic four storey building, built in 1877, is noticeable for its blue tiling, triptych fenestration and stone carving of a female head at its top.
The work currently being carried out will see a number of historic features restored.
This will determine a space for three apartments on the ground floor, and a commercial unit. Craft & Sons is considering a number of options for the commercial unit, including a wine bar. Duncan Craft, who works for the company, said: “It is a grand Victorian building with a stone carving on the parapet wall of what appears to be the Greek goddess Athena.”
Southport has recently been awarded £38.5 million in Town Deal funding from the Government and is going through a period of change and uncertainty.
Regarding its future, Duncan is cautiously positive.
He said: “The United Kingdom, particularly after Brexit, has set her mind on becoming an open and diverse society.
“Our universities, public services and much of business have accepted this new paradigm. Our high streets have to adapt; they need to transition from being all retail into a thriving and mixed economy.
“Put bluntly, Southport needs to attract more people: more diversity, more leisure, more business and more residential; and to a high standard.
“This means organised national infrastructure, and organised and coordinated action between the local authority and private investment to become a community of people living and working in the town centre.
“This will be a huge benefit to local businesses, and will attract more activity, more commerce, and more creativity.
“The Grand at the northern end of Lord Street is a good addition to the town. The Marine Lake Events Centre and The Cove Resort, assuming they happen, will be game changers.”
He added: “Our small works at both 339 and 479 will be contemporary; and highlight the historic structure and fabric of the buildings. Its engineering, space and natural light will be respected, and structural beams and columns exposed, where practicable.”
Craft & Sons think both their buildings, and others too in Lord Street are under-used. The firm thinks its proposals will bring these buildings back into use and assist in the regeneration of Southport’s economy.
