Southport FC game at Haig Avenue this Saturday called off as a mark of respect
Southport FC’s Home game against Chorley this Saturday (10th September 2022) has been postponed after the death yesterday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Club will be among all National League sides delaying their fixtures out of a mark of respect for The Queen, who died aged 96 after reigning for the past 70 years.
A Southport FC spokesperson said: “Further to this morning’s statement by Debbie Hewitt, Chair of The Football Association, all National League System, FA Trophy, and grassroots fixtures scheduled for this weekend will not take place as a mark of respect.
“The Queen was the FA’s patron, and Prince William is its President.
“At this moment National League fixtures will go ahead as planned from Monday 12 September onwards although we understand no sporting event of any kind will be permitted on the day of The Queen’s funeral.
“The decision to postpone this weekend’s fixtures is taken in line with guidance from the FA in consultation with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
“The League fully supports this stance.”

Southport Pleasureland closes for two weekends as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II
Southport Pleasureland will remain closed for the next two weekends as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II yesterday (Thursday, September 8).
CEO Norman Wallis has decided to suspend all entertainment activity at the popular waterfront attraction as the country enters an official period of mourning.
Southport Pleasureland opens weekends (Spring / Autumn) and special dates outside the summer school holidays.
A number of other businesses in Southport have also announced their temporary closure as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II.
A Book of Condolence has been opened at The Atkinson in Southport, while floral tributes are being laid in the Town Hall Gardens.
Under these exceptional and unforeseen circumstances, any tickets bought in advance for Southport Pleasureland for the next two weekends will be refunded.

Southport FC awaits guidance over this weekend’s Home game against Chorley
Southport FC are due to play Chorley at Home at 3pm this Saturday, but are waiting on advice before they make a decision on whether the fixture will go ahead.
A Club spokesperson said: “Like the rest of the football world, we are awaiting guidance from The National League and DCMS about whether or not this weekend’s fixtures should /will take place.
“We will issue a further update once we have more information.”

Book of Condolence opened at The Atkinson in Southport
Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered through a Book of Condolence which will be placed at The Atkinson in Southport for people to sign.
Britain’s longest ever serving monarch tragically died today after reigning for 70 years. She was 96 years old.
Areas outside the Princess Diana Memorial Gardens on Lord Street, Southport and Bootle Town Hall have been designated as places where residents can leave floral tributes in memory of Her Majesty the Queen.
Flags at Southport Town Hall and all flags at council buildings and assets across the borough will be lowered to half-mast as Sefton pays tribute to Her Majesty.
Books of Condolence at both The Atkinson in Southport and Bootle town hall will be collated and archived.
Both The Atkinson in Southport and Bootle Town Hall will be open from Friday 9th September between 9am and 5pm for residents and visitors to sign the books of condolence. In the event of large crowds forming, a queuing system will be in place at both buildings.
An online book of remembrance has also been made available by Buckingham Palace and will soon be available via the Sefton Council website www.sefton.gov.uk
For Sefton residents who cannot access the online book of remembrance, printed Condolence Cards will be available from all Sefton Libraries and Family Wellbeing Centres. These can be filled in by hand and either returned to one of the libraries or family wellbeing centres or can be posted back to either Southport or Bootle Town Halls. These cards will be collated and stored in council archives.
During the mourning period and state funeral, some of the Mayor of Sefton’s engagements may be cancelled as a mark of respect. Other engagements during this period may begin with a period of silence to honour the Queen’s passing.
Floral tributes at both Southport and Bootle will remain in place until after the state funeral. These will then be sensitively collected and disposed of in an appropriate fashion.

Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Clare Carragher recalls Queen’s visits to Sefton
“It is with great sadness that we have announced the death of Her Majesty the Queen.
“There will be an official ten days of mourning and during this period I am sure most of us will reflect on her wonderful life and think of any lasting memories of her majesty who was a great monarch and highly regarded across the world.
“While we all deal with loss differently, we can remember the Queen fondly and look back at the many occasions she visited our wonderful borough and touched the lives of so many.
“She officially made numerous visits to Sefton including a stop off in Bootle and Crosby in October 1954 and a tour of Lancashire which included a motor cavalcade driving through Southport in April, 1955.

“The Grand National at Aintree was attended by the Queen in March, 1956 and it wasn’t until December, 1962 that the Monarch returned to Bootle.
“Further visits to Bootle were recorded in June 1977 as part of her Silver Jubilee Tour and also in May 1993 when the Queen visited Bootle Town Hall commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.
“Prior to that Her Majesty the Queen spent time in Southport in June, 1985 which included a visit to Altcar Training Camp.
“I’m sure so many people will remember these visits to Sefton with great fondness and contentment.”

“For many of us, she is the only monarch we have ever known, a constant in our life. Through times of turmoil and tranquility, she was there, it is only when something so constant, so permanent is gone that we truly realise what we have lost.
“The sudden change is a tremendous and deeply saddening shock.
“Her Majesty’s life was one of remarkable service, putting our nation and others before herself. She reigned with dignity, humanity and selflessness. She embodied the idea of service above self.
“On behalf of all members of the Conservative Group on Sefton Council, I extend my deepest condolences to the Royal Family.
