Southport RFC Men 1st XV visited Rochdale who were 2nd in the table and had only lost 1 match so far this season.
The Southport team once again were full of youth and enthusiasm and up for this significant challenge.
The match was a very tight affair for the first 30 minutes and Southport had an opportunity to take the lead but unfortunately missed a penalty.
As the half progressed Southport suffered a couple of injuries to key players and Rochdale slowly started to exert their superiority and managed to score a couple of tries, one of which was converted. At the turn the score was 12 – 0 to the home team.
The second half continued in a similar vein with the Southport team, to a man, defending stoically but in the end Rochdale were too good and strong and with Southport down in 14 fit men on the pitch for the last 20 minutes, won 36 – 0.
Next week sees Southport men 1st team at home to Leigh in what promises to be another stern test.
Southport 2nd team took on Rochdale 2nd team at Waterloo which was a pre cursor to the ladies match with the visitors running out winners 14 – 31.
The combined Colts team entertained the Waterloo crowd on Sunday afternoon and they were excellent in their match against top of the table Kendal who were unbeaten this season and despite the home teams efforts, remained so with a well-deserved 10 – 38 win. Southport scored two excellent tries and had numerous opportunities to score more but couldn’t quite finish off their good work.
