A Yellow Weather Warning for Wind is in place over Southport today and for the next three days with Storm Dudley forecast to bring gales reaching 90mph, swiftly followed by the arrival of Storm Eunice.

The Met Office said Storm Dudley is set to bring “a spell of very strong winds and possible disruption” from later this afternoon onwards.

Meteorologists have placed an Amber Weather Warning for Wind just north of Southport, across Lancashire and northern England and up into Scotland.

The Met Office said:

  • road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible, as well as some roads and bridges may close
  • damage to trees and buildings is possible
  • power cuts may occur
  • large waves may cause beach material to be thrown onto sea fronts and coastal roads

A yellow warning for wind is also in place from 6pm, covering all of northern and central England, most of Wales and southern and central Scotland.

This warning is in force until 9pm on Friday, and expands to cover Northern Ireland from Thursday.

The Met Office said Storm Dudley will move across the northern half of the nation tonight into Thursday morning, before the week’s second storm, called Eunice, on Friday.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said: ‘It’s going to be a windy day throughout with those winds continuing to pick up through the afternoon and the evening.

‘There will be some snow on the hills across Scotland, but it’s the rain and more particularly the wind we’re concerned about in this storm system on Wednesday.

“It’s likely to cause transport disruption and dangerous conditions by the sea.”
