West Lancashire Yacht Club (WLYC) in Southport is proud to be among the first clubs nationally to be recognised as a British Sailing Pathway Club — a newly introduced status that will be awarded to more clubs in the future.

This recognition reflects the club’s strong commitment to junior sailing, helping more young people get out on the water, learn to race, and develop a lifelong love of sailing. It also means West Lancs Yacht Club will receive ongoing support from British Sailing and the RYA to further enhance its junior sailing programmes.

At WLYC, they are focused on building from the base: providing grassroots access to sailing for every child in Southport, supporting junior sailors as they develop, and giving those with the ambition and talent the chance to go even further. The Pathway Club initiative, launched by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), helps clubs like this to nurture the next generation of sailors – whether they’re aiming for the Olympics or simply discovering the joy of racing at their local club.

A National Network with a Local Impact

By offering high-quality coaching and training in a friendly, affordable, and team-oriented environment, West Lancashire Yacht Club is becoming a hub for young talent – not just future champions, but lifelong sailors too – developing confidence and social skills while meeting the technical and physical challenges of the sport.

Ian Hughes, WLYC Training Principal, said:
“Being recognised as a British Sailing Pathway Club is a great step for us. It’s not just about producing top-level sailors – though we’re proud of those who’ve gone on to race at the highest levels. It’s just as much about making sailing accessible to more young people in our community, helping them build confidence, skills and friendships through the sport. The Pathway helps us support both – the grassroots and the high flyers.”

Hannah Wilcox, RYA Pathway Club Manager, said:

“We are thrilled to welcome West Lancashire Yacht Club into the Pathway Club network. Their commitment to fostering young talent and promoting accessible, high-quality racing and race training aligns perfectly with the goals of the programme. We look forward to supporting their efforts in inspiring the next generation of sailors.”

Looking Ahead

With this new status, West Lancashire Yacht Club will continue to grow its junior programme, strengthen links with the RYA, and create even more opportunities for young sailors in and around Southport. Whether a child’s ambition is to race for Team GB or just enjoy a windy day on the lake, WLYC is here to help them on their way.
