Who has memories and stories of learning to swim at the ‘Vicky’ Baths?

Owners at Victoria Leisure Club on the Promenade in Southport would love to see people email or send in / drop off their stories as part of the on site exhibition as part of this year’s Southport Heritage Open Days festival.

People can book on a free tour at Victoria Leisure Club, and see original architecture from the late 1800s, memorabilia, old photos, architect’s plans and an original document from 1927.

The document guide, just on 100 years old, was issued by the ‘Superintendent’ of the Baths of the County Borough of Southport, giving clear instructions how bathers should conduct themselves on several items, and wear the correct attire during ‘mixed bathing’.

This Heritage event celebrating 150 years of swimming and fitness at the Promenade is one of 17 in Southport for eight days from this Friday (12th September 2025) through until Sunday 21st September 2025.

It includes the development of part of the building into Southport Squash club, then the emergence of the health and leisure club in the 1990’s during the gym and fitness explosion.

Details, dates for entry or specific one off events have a web page each.
