Rowland Adams

Tributes have been paid to legendary Southport nightclub owner Rowland Adams, as funeral details were released.

His funeral of Southport legend Rowland Adams will take place on Monday 11th September at 1pm at Burscough Crematorium.

Cars will be driving past Birkers bar in Birkdale Village between 12pm and 12.20pm on the day for those wanting to pay respects from the village.

Rowland Adams ran several clubs around Southport and followed in the footsteps of his father Roy Adams who was a well-known local businessman, author, bouncer and former owner of the Cavern Club in Liverpool.

During the 1980s and 1990s Rowland, along with his family, operated some of the region’s most popular clubs including The Kingsway, West End Club and Toad Hall in Southport, and Shorrocks Hill Country Club in Formby.

Speaking on Stand Up For Southport, one person said: “So sorry to hear this. I spent many a happy evening in The Kingsway during the late ‘80s and ‘90s.

“Rowland and his father Roy were good friends of my late dad, so I’d like to think they’re all busy reminiscing about the glory days of the Merseyside club scene right now. Condolences to his family.”

Another said: “So sad to hear of Rowland’s passing,he was a true gentleman and a great boss.

“I worked for Rowland for many years at The Kingsway, DJ on the top floor.

“I always got on great with Rowland and have many memories of the good times.

“My heart goes out to Shelley and the family, rest in peace my friend.”

Other tributes included:

“A nice man. Friendly on the doors. Tough but fair on the football pitch.”

Another said: “If you went to The Kingsway or The West End you may have seen him at the door, he also had The System and numerous other clubs around Merseyside. Similarly, like his Dad, Roy, he was a pretty solid honourable guy, thoughts are with his remaining brother Paul and family.”

Another person wrote: “One tribute said: “Rowland was a big man physically and had a big heart – a courageous man who feared no one and unhesitatingly faced down the bullies we all too frequently encountered in Clubland. Condolences to all the Adams family. RIP Rowland. You will be sorely missed.”

Rowland’s father Roy was the last owner of the original Cavern club in Liverpool, looked after doors, and ran nightclubs, dancehalls, restaurants, and country clubs between 1957 and 1999.
