Tributes have been paid to Southport man Clive Pownceby, who died earlier this month.

The well-renowned organiser of the Bothy Folk Club for 46 years passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday, 4th January.

His untimely death has left his wife, Jean, family, friends from far and wide and the world of folk shocked and devastated.

Clive was also involved in many folk dance events as drummer in Mr Blundell Alms and the Jack Ketch Band, as well as being organiser of ceilidhs in Southport for many years.

His eclectic talents were engaged in performances with Untrained Melody and the popular rock’n’roll band, Lunchtime Legends, and he was part of the very popular Cork Jackets and Drill presentation.

He was a well-known figure at many Folk Festivals including Fylde and Wirral where he was a regular compere, and Whitby Folk Week which he and Jean attended every year.

He will be sadly missed. Warm tributes have poured in from around the country and further afield – ‘it’s like a beacon of light has been taken from the world’.

Funeral details will be posted on the Bothy Folk Club website when available.
