School’s out for summer! But don’t worry – as children across Southport begin their school holidays, there is lots to keep them entertained at The Atkinson in Southport!

Here are some of the many free summer activities they can enjoy over the summer months, plus some details of what’s coming up for adults too:

The summer holidays are upon us! We know how hard it is to keep the children occupied, entertained and educated which is why The Atkinson is here to help!

Enjoy our free museums, galleries, libraries and shop. We are open Monday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm.

We also have activities especially for families: expect LEGO construction club, craft workshops, story & rhyme time sessions, Art Box antics, and even Young Curators summer school.

Don’t forget to visit our on-site café for a sweet treat after your days of Atkinson adventures!

Tea Dance: July

Monday 17 July 2023. 1pm. 


Are you young at heart?

Join us on the third Monday of every month for an afternoon of live music and entertainment provided by Sefton Opera (Sefton Older Persons Enabling Resource & Action) featuring Elvis, music from resident band Memory Lane and a variety of dance routines from The Bootle Belles. Plus variety acts and special guests.

These events are aimed at the over 50s, with plenty of chance to get up and dance or to spectate and socialise.

We welcome the line-dancers, armchair hand wavers,  jivers and the everything in-betweens to meet new friends and join in the fun.

So join us for a great time, show off your moves and raise some funds for Sefton Opera.

£3 on the door.

Story & Rhyme Time

Wednesday 19 July 2023. 11:30pm.
Free. Booking required. Age 0-4.


Explore stories through rhyme and help develop your child’s language and communication skills while meeting other parents and carers. Together with our friendly librarians, babies and under-fives will enjoy learning new songs, dancing, and making friends.

Story & Rhyme Time sessions take place once a week on a Wednesday at 11:30am.

  • Admission is free.
  • Ages 0-4. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Approximately 45 minutes.
  • Places are limited. Pre-booking is required on on a first come, first served basis.
