The temporary closure of Court Road / Lord Street Service Road in Southport town centre for 14 months has been agreed by Sefton Council, as building work on the former Grand Casino building continues to take place.

The building is owned by Mikhail Hotel & Leisure Group, which recently revealed its plans to create the new ‘Tower Of Hope’ on the site.

The landmark, which would be taller than Blackpool Tower, would be 48 stories high and 178 metres tall if planning permission is approved.

It would include 140 high quality residential apartments, 109 five star hotel rooms, a restaurant, a wedding venue, a fun-themed bar and a large car park.

Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group already operates successful venues on Lord Street in Southport including The Bold Hotel, the Lord Street Hotel, Lord Street Sports Bar and Punch Tarmey’s Irish Pub, while also operating the feature bar inside Southport Market.

The necessary legal procedures, including those of public consultation and advertising the council’s intention to implement the Order, will now be put into place.

In his report, Sefton Council Head of Highways and Public Protection Peter Moore said: “Significant development work is being undertaken to the former Grand Casino, situated on Court Road / Lord Street Service Road, to the north of Union Street, Southport.

“In order for these works to be carried out safely, without causing risks to passing pedestrians and motorists, it will be necessary to close Court Road / Lord Street Service Road in front of the building.

“Due to the layout of the highway network and the width of the road which prevents vehicles from turning it will be necessary to close the road from its junction with Union Street for a distance of 66m in a north easterly direction. No diversion route is necessary.”
