People are invited to The Atkinson on Lord Street in Southport today where they’ll be launching THREE exciting new exhibitions!
The Summer Exhibition Launch will see The Atkinson open between 10am and 4pm where people can discover new exhibitions along with a full day of talks, tours, and craft workshops – fun for all ages!
The new displays feature a very special 150th anniversary exhibition with some famous and rarely seen works from The Atkinson hung in Victorian fashion – from floor to ceiling – in a way that has to be seen to be believed.
You can also savour the magic of J.R.R. Tolkien with The Magic of Middle-earth by Matt Fox and I Love You Southport with Chila Burman and hear Katherine Dereli talk about her work, Dead Industry & Friendly Objects, which went on display in the Landing Gallery two weeks ago.

12:30pm – 1:30pm: Exhibition Tour – Chila Kumari Burman: I Love You Southport.
Chila Kumari Burman MBE is a celebrated British artist known for her vibrant, playful and rebellious artworks. Burman was born in Bootle to Punjabi- Hindu parents and later studied at Southport College of Art. ‘I Love You Southport’ includes work inspired by her father’s ice cream van, which travelled along the Sefton coast.
2pm – 3pm: Meet the Artist – Katherine Dereli: Dead Industry and Friendly Objects
Katherine Dereli is a Lancashire based oil painter with a classical training in sculpture. Her subjects are various, what unites them is a particular approach to paint. Katherine tries to carefully observe and reproduce colour from life, mixed cleanly on the palette and laid down to create a varied surface of alternating high detail and broad ‘messy’ brushwork.
4pm: Art Galleries close
