Church leaders say St Luke’s Church has not closed down despite claims to the contrary.
The church, located on the corner of St Luke’s Road and Hawkshead Street, will be used less often in the coming months but Father Tom Carpenter says this is only a temporary measure.
In the short term, the congregation of St Luke’s will join the congregation at Holy Trinity for regular services while the likes of funerals and weddings will continue to be held at St Luke’s.
Concerns had been raised over the church’s future after a sign was placed outside its boundary referencing an apparent closure.
According to Fr Tom, the temporary relocation is not unusual and will allow time for the congregation to rebuild before moving back to St Luke’s. While there is no set date for this yet, there will be a Christmas service as usual.
Fr Tom said: “The church council would plan how we might bring them, and some new people, back to St Luke’s”
Explaining similar had happened in Preston recently, he added: “It’s not unusual, nothing radical. Normal service will resume.”
