All sports fixtures on Sefton Council run pitches are OFF this weekend (Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th January 2024) after becoming waterlogged during Storm Henk and further heavy rainfall that followed.

Pitches SMBC Tweeted: “After the recent storms and what seems to be continuous rain for the last 4 weeks, Friday is overcast but surprisingly, not raining. Sefton MBC have checked all of the venues and most were underwater with little or no chance of it subsiding for the weekend.

“All games are off this weekend on council pitches.

“Check with leagues if at Buckley Hill.”

Piches affected Deansgate Lane, Smithy Green, Duke Street, Carr Lane, Devonshire Road, Ferryside Lane, Portland Street, Meols Park, and Bedford Park.

They added: “It also seems that some clubs use the parks to train on as their own pitches are not playable and this causes issues for the teams who pay to use them.  If you see a team training on any pitches this weekend they DO NOT have permission to do so and they are damaging them for others.”

Southport Trinity FC said their pitch on Roe Lane submerged.

They said: “The weather has been no friend to us again this week and unfortunately all games at the Rookery are cancelled for this weekend.

“A pitch inspection has just been carried out but this photo from earlier in the week shows what we were up against.

“Sefton Council has also closed its pitches and those who are playing at Hightown should keep an eye on the league’s social media for updates.

“Here’s hoping for the return of fixtures next week.”
