Talented high school students came together in a fascinating competition to create the best sandwich in Southport – and the results were delicious.

The Southport Signature Sandwich contest was determined by a panel of judges at The Grand in Southport as talented youngsters from Southport Learning Trust worked in the kitchens alongside professional chefs from Mikhail Hotel & Leisure Group.

The overall winner was Dominic Moran-Wright from Meols Cop High School with his stunning Asian Chicken Wrap.

The other finalists were:

Meols Cop High School

Emma Goud – (Brioche Whippy)

Range High School

Mia Willis (Ozzy Faccui Melt)

Madison Ling (Saucy Sub)

Greenbank High School

Scarlett Parker (Scarlett’s Melt)

Naomi Price (It’s a Porker)

The students were given a briefing from Tracy Holgate from Sefton Council’s Tourism team to come up with a Southport Signature Sandwich for potential sale at Southport Food and Drink Festival which takes place at Victoria Park this summer.

An internal competition was set and Year 10 students from schools across the trust worked with their Food & Nutrition or Catering and Hospitality teachers to design and make their sandwiches in school.

These were internally judged and two winners chosen to represent their school at The Grand Final.

Southport Learning Trust CEO Ian Raikes said:

“I was so privileged to be a judge at the final of the Trust Social Signature Sandwich Event!

“The food was exceptional and all judges from the catering industry found it incredibly difficult to judge.

“We were indebted to the support of the team at The Grand for providing chef mentors and allowing the pupils to use their amazing facilities.

“Thi was a great example of business and education working in tandem and hopefully inspiring our chefs of the future for the growing industry in Southport.”

ASM Global Culinary Director Chef Tagg said:

“The day was all about the young talent coming through and these young people showing what they can do.

“The flair and imagination being displayed by these youngsters was really interesting to see.

“There were some great flavours and some brave creations.

“All of the sandwiches which they created were suitable for the high street, and could have been sold and served in professional hospitality venues.

“At this level that is impressive and refreshing to see.

“Working in the kitchen alongside professional chefs from Mikhail Hotel & Leisure Group has really helped to bring their ideas to life.

“Now it is all about keeping that passion for hospitality going and seeing where it can take them.”

Mikhail Hotel & Leisure Group Executive Development Chef Anthony Dunbar said:

“It was exceptional to see these young people with so much drive and passion creating great food while working alongside and being mentored by our chefs.

“The skill level they showed was so high.

“They left the judges with a very hard decision to choose their winner.

“Every sandwich they designed would fit well within one of our venues.”
