A group of Southport nursery children have commemorated the work of the late scientist and primatologist Jane Goodall in the wake of her passing away last month.

Children in the nursery at Linaker Primary School have been learning about Jane Goodall’s work this month as part of the ‘inspirational person’ scheme. Each month, the children learn about a different inspirational person.

The children at Linaker have learnt all about Mrs Goodall’s work with chimpanzees and other monkeys over decades. She was best known for more than six decades of field research on the social and family life of wild chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania.

She passed away last month at the age of 91 in California.

The children at Linaker then role-played as vets, taking care of the toy animals in the nursery and discussing their aspirations for the future, including if they would also like to become scientists or vets when they are older.

Mark Cunniffe, who is the headteacher at Linaker Primary School, reflected on the children’s learning about Mrs Goodall, which combined learning and play in an age-appropriate way. He said:

“We were very pleased to be able to introduce our children to the inspirational work of someone like Jane Goodall in an accessible and age-appropriate way.

“We know that it’s in these formative years when interests and passions can form which can take people right through childhood and into adulthood.

“For us to be able to teach our children about the importance of conservation and biodiversity is so important, and this couldn’t be more timely with Jane Goodall’s sad passing last month.”
