Exclusive letter to the people of Southport by Prime Minister Keir Starmer through Stand Up For Southport
Dear Southport,
Last summer, you showed Britain the meaning of community. In the most traumatic of circumstances, you stood united. Neighbours, volunteers, businesses, faith groups – a whole town brought together by compassion. Wrapping your collective arms tightly around your own.

Of course, so much of this positivity and love took place in the Town Hall Gardens on Lord Street, which became a rallying point for hope and solidarity. Every community has its special places, and I recognise how special the Gardens became for you. Certainly, they are special for the families of Bebe, Elsie and Alice, who have developed a vision for their renovation, as a thank you to the community for the immense kindness you have shown. That is what they told me today in Downing Street, where I was honoured to hear more about their vision.
It’s a vision that proudly celebrates the spirit of Southport – a vibrant gathering place for families and residents, young and old. When completed, it will host open-air performances, bustling market stalls and regular community events. And, in time, I hope it can become a symbol of your resilience and renewal. A source of joy and connection that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
That is why today I was able to share that the government will contribute £5 million towards the families’ vision. This matches the funding already committed by Sefton Council and the Liverpool City Region, taking the total invested to £10 million. And it reflects a shared determination, across local, regional and national government, to do right by the people of Southport. Because ultimately, the entire nation stands with you.
As I visit towns across the country, I am always struck by the pride people have for their community. It’s a human feeling – a desire to feel rooted in your home, connected to the people you come into contact with every day. But it’s also a powerful force that can overcome division and bend the future towards renewal. That, for me, is the true potential of community. As my friend, the late MP Jo Cox put it, “we have far more in common with each other than things that divide us”.
Southport, more than anywhere in our country, understands this and has demonstrated it with a frankly inspiring level of dignity. It is time for the nation to say thank you to every family affected.
The renovation and refurbishment of the Town Hall Gardens can become a focal point for that purpose. A permanent symbol of the pride you feel for your town. And the pride the entire country feels for you.
