Southport FC has celebrated winning the 2022 Lancashire Challenge Trophy

Southport FC has celebrated winning the 2022 Lancashire Challenge Trophy tonight!

The Sandgrounders won the trophy for a 10th time, with a 2-1 victory over West Didsbury at the Lancashire FA HQ at the County Ground in Leyland.

It was the first time they had played the Manchester side.

Southport FC won after a dominating first half display.

On 14 minutes Woods put Southport ahead, slotting home from Doyle’s pass over the defence.

Eight minutes before half time, Munro sent the ball through to Anson after a scramble and the Captain made no mistake.

Southport kept their 2-0 lead until the 91st minute, when Westall netted a consolation goal for West Didsbury from inside the area.

West Didsbury was the 222nd team Southport FC has played as a non league side.

The route to the final has included a 3-1 home win against Daisy Hill, a 3-1 away win at Charnock Richard and the 2-1 semi-final win at Leyland against Lancaster City.

West Didsbury promised stern opposition after being promoted as champions of the North West Counties South Division scoring an amazing 114 goals in their 38 games and losing just three games. They also broke a league record when winning 18-0 against St Martins.

Southport FC has just three league games left of the 2021/22 season, including their final Home fixture on Bank Holiday Monday (2nd May 2022) against AFC Telford.
