A Southport businessman who was hospitalised for six months after contracting Covid-19 says he will “forever be thankful to the NHS team who brought me back to life”.

Andrew Mikhail, owner of Mikhail Hotel and Leisure, is now determined to show his thanks by hosting a glittering ‘Thank You NHS’ Gala Dinner at The Grand in Southport this January, with funds going towards the ICU Steps charity.

The event will take place on Saturday 21st January 2023, as a personal thank you from Andrew, dedicated to “all the wonderful NHS staff and in memory of all the people who lost their lives or who have been affected by Covid”.

Radio and panto star Claire Simmo will host the dinner, with entertainment from comedian Mick Miller, swing singer Asa Murphy and the Soul Kinda Wonderful group.

Andrew spent weeks in intensive care fighting for life and suffered a cardiac arrest. His heart stopped for a staggering 17 minutes before the NHS medical team managed to successfully restart his heart and brought him back to life.

Andrew Mikhail, Chairman of The Mikhail Group said:

“I will forever be thankful to the NHS team who brought me back to life and to ICU Steps for supporting my wife and children when I could not, there are no words, deeds or donations that will ever express my gratitude.

“It is my absolute honour to be hosting this gala dinner in support of this amazing charity.  It seems only fitting that this gala dinner, held in a building I brought back to life, will benefit those who brought me back to life.”

When Andrew Mikhail opened The Grand in Southport in July, little did people know the incredible  personal journey it took to fulfil his ambition to bring the historic venue back to life.

The glitzy opening of The Grand Brasserie and Chloe’s Bar followed a few months later with the launch of the Princess Grace Suite was a remarkable achievement which masked a very personal fight for his own life when Andrew contracted Covid-19 early in 2021.

Andrew spent weeks in intensive care fighting for life and was teetering at death’s door.

During Andrew’s traumatic ordeal which saw him hospitalised for six months his mind was firmly focussed on fighting as hard as he could so that he could stay with his family and continue to be the loving husband and father he always had been.

Andrew will forever be indebted to the incredible nurses and doctors who saved his life and will spend the rest of his life eternally grateful to the heroes of the NHS.  He also wants to pay tribute to the 200,000 people and families who sadly were not as fortunate as him.

During this distressing time, Andrew’s family were supported by a charitable organisation called ICU Steps.

The UK’s only intensive care patient support charity supports those who have been affected by critical illness.

On Saturday 21st January 2023, Andrew is hosting a fun-filled fundraising Gala Dinner at The Grand on Lord Street in Southport to raise much needed funds to allow ICU Steps to continue their invaluable work in Intensive Care units.

The evening is packed to the rafters with first class entertainment including the ‘King of Swing’ Asa Murphy and the unbelievably talented ‘Soul Kinda Wonderful’ who will be singing a mix of floor-filling classics.  The evening will be hosted by Claire Simmo and the very talented Mick Miller will also be on the bill to bring laughter to the occasion and to finish in true Mikhail Group style will be the sensational Jack Bennett. The black-tie dinner will take place in the stunning and stylish Princess Grace Suite and  tickets, priced at £75 per person, include a drink on arrival and a sumptuous three-course dinner.
