A number of potential developers have expressed an interest in redeveloping The Sands pub site in Ainsdale in Southport.
The iconic venue, next to Ainsdale Beach, has been derelict since closing its doors in 2017.
The venue went on the market with Fitton Estates last summer, with potential investors invited to submit redevelopment proposals.
A decision on the pub’s future was initially expected during Spring, with Sefton Council saying there had been “a good level of interest shown so far”.
It is part of an ambitious bid to regenerate the ‘Ainsdale coastal gateway’ area.
Sefton Council says that it is continuing its discussions with potential new owners, and is reviewing them as part of its review of the entire Ainsdale Gateway area.
A Sefton Council spokesperson said: “This work will look at all assets at the coastal gateway, including The Sands, Toad Hall, council operational bases, and potential leisure, education, and recreational opportunities.
“Maintenance work to Toad Hall will continue until September this year, with work being done to make the building structure safe and watertight.”
They added: “Following market testing of The Sands, a number of expressions of interest were received.
“Discussions are ongoing with parties and will continue as part of the proposed review work going forward.
“More details on this work and the outcomes will be shared when available.”
Sefton Council is currently progressing plans to create a new car park near the beach, while revamping the toilet and wash facilities and advertising for new food and drink operators.
In January this year, a Sefton Council spokesperson said: “Another positive sign at Ainsdale is the progress on the redevelopment of the former Sands pub.
“The building is currently out to market looking for a private sector partner to invest in, develop and operate the site.
“A good level of interest has been shown so far, with a decision likely in Spring on a preferred potential developer for the site, with more work to firm up proposals leading on from there.”
The local authority said last year that any scheme would have to be “appropriate for this leisure, visitor and tourist location”, and could include the boating lake and land nearby.
No formal guide price has been set, with all offers considered ‘on their individual merits’.
Fitton Estates said: “Redevelopment proposals are invited for the former Sands Public House at Ainsdale Beach, near Southport.
“Sefton MBC may also consider proposals that incorporate and utilise the adjacent boating lake and land curtilage.
“Situated next to a prominent gateway site adjacent to Ainsdale Beach, which has recently been recognised as one of Britain’s best beaches.
“Large site with opportunity for development (subject to necessary planning consents). On-site car parking.
“No formal Guide Price for this opportunity and all submissions and offers will be considered on their individual merits.
“The successful developer would initially be granted a Building Licence followed by a new 125 year long leasehold interest at a peppercorn rental, on development completion.
“Redevelopment proposals are invited appropriate for this leisure, visitor and tourist location.”
