Review: Jason Byrne at Southport Comedy Festival

Wow what a night! The brilliant Jason Byrne is called The King of Southport Comedy Festival sponsored by Halliwell Jones Kia for very good reason.

This was another sell out show – the ninth full house of this year’s festival so far.

After 16 nights of laughter, the final gig is on at Victoria Park this evening, with Deirdre O’Kane.

Jason Byrne was exceptional – two hours of non-stop laugh out loud riotous fun.

It was a joy to see a real comedy genius at work.

Jason Byrne has a talent for live comedy that reminds me a lot of Billy Connolly.

He is an expert at storytelling, with many great stories from his childhood in Ireland – which he compares with how children are brought up today!

As ever he had a full supporting cast – the audience.

They were the stars of the show too as he chatted with audience members, brought them on stage for a Coldplay ‘kiss-cam’ gag, or invited them to play guess the vegetable, or improv an Irish song.

He remembered some of the bizarre incidents and conversations from last year’s show too – it’s like watching a live sitcom being created and performed in real time.

After the show he was delighted to spend time with volunteers from the show before heading back to his hotel.

As ever, the show was held inside a huge luxury marquee created by Elite Marquees Ltd which is fully heated and seated, with a large bar area inside with pub style seating and food available outside from Willow Catering.

Tonight sees Deirdre O’Kane perform before the marquee is transformed into Southport’s biggest bierkeller for Southport Oktoberfest (24th – 25th October 2025).

Looking forward to Jason Byrne returning to Southport Comedy Festival next year!
