People are invited to celebrate the annual Windrush commemoration event in Southport this June.
Raising the Flag, Sharing the Story: Windrush Legacy Lives On in Southport will take place on
Friday 20th June 2025.
It starts at 5pm at Southport Town Hall on Lord Street before moving on to The Junction, at Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street.
The event is organised by SACHA (Southport African and Caribbean Heritage Association.
Organiser Gemma Collins said: “Join us for a powerful evening of remembrance, reflection, and celebration as we honour the Windrush Generation and explore their lasting legacy in Southport and beyond.
“We begin at 5pm with a Windrush Generation Flag Raising Ceremony at Southport Town Hall, a moment to show respect and recognition for the Caribbean men and women who helped rebuild Britain after World War II.
“Following the ceremony, all are invited to a community gathering at The Junction in Wayfarers Arcade.
“This special event will feature the Windrush: Our Story, Our Community pop-up exhibition, showcasing, personal stories that bring the Windrush story to life. We also hope to screen a short documentary video, adding a rich, visual layer to the experience.
“Enjoy free English and Caribbean fusion food, served to celebrate the vibrant culinary heritage of the Windrush Generation. While food is complimentary, donations are warmly welcomed to support the future of this important community project.
“This is more than a commemoration — it’s a community celebration and an opportunity to learn, reflect, and honour the past together.
“All are welcome. Come raise the flag and share the story.”
