Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said today that he has been “overwhelmed by the bravery and determination of the families” of Bebe King,Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Dasilva Aguiar since the Southport tragedy.

The Prime Minister spoke today as the report was published following the Southport Inquiry.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

“The brutal, senseless murders of Bebe, Elsie and Alice marked one of the darkest moments in our country’s history. It is a tragedy we will never forget.

“I have been overwhelmed by the bravery and determination of their families, and as Prime Minister, I will do everything I can to honour their memory.

“The report today is truly harrowing and profoundly disturbing. It sets out in stark detail the systemic failures over the five years that led to this terrible event, and the repeated missed opportunities that could have prevented it.

“While nothing will ever bring these three little girls back, erase the trauma from those injured, or undo the lasting impact on those who witnessed such horror, I am determined to make the fundamental changes needed to keep the public safe.”

The report today shared how the murders of the three girls in Southport and the wounding of several others could have been prevented if the killer’s parents and authorities had acted on opportunities to deal with him in the years before the attack, according to the findings of the Southport Inquiry.

The report states that it is “highly likely” the attack would not have occurred if various agencies had dealt with the killer’s behaviour earlier.

The report concludes that if the killer’s parents “had done what they morally ought to have done”, he “would not have been at liberty to conduct the attack and it would not therefore have occurred”.
