Ormskirk Hospital has introduced a new automated dispensing robot to help make the process of giving out medications faster, safer, and more reliable. The system is designed to support hospital staff and improve patient care.
The new robot stores, dispenses, and tracks medications automatically, reducing the chance of errors and helping the pharmacy team work more efficiently. Using barcode technology, the robot carefully selects each medication and ensures it matches the request from our dispensers. This step-by-step verification process helps make sure every patient receives the right medicine at the right dose.
Key benefits include:
- Improved patient safety: Barcode scanning and automated dispensing reduce the risk of mistakes
- Faster service: Quick and accurate dispensing
- Better stock management: The system keeps track of medicine supplies to make sure important medications are always available and reduces wastage
- Saves time for staff: Manages routine dispensing, helping the team work more efficiently and safely.

Jonathan Peacock, Chief Pharmacist, said:
“ This new technology is an important step forward in how we manage medications. By automating routine processes, our pharmacy team can work more efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of safety and accuracy.”
The introduction of the robot is part of Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospital’s ongoing efforts to use technology to enhance hospital services. Patients will benefit from faster access to medications, and staff will have more time for hands-on care.
