New apartments could be created at the Old Ship pub in Southport town centre.
It is part of plans to bring the iconic pub, at 43 Eastbank Street, back into use.
The pub has been closed since October 2016.
Owner Mo Ali believes his proposals will help to “add to the supply of affordable property within the locality”.
A planning application has been submitted to Sefton Council which says: “This application deals with the first floor where our intentions are to add two flats.
“The property is a Public House consisting of three floors. The ground floor is used as a Pub / Restaurant and the upper floors have been used as offices, store in the past and there are currently three flats in place.

“The proposals are to add two new flats at first floor level.
“The existing use of the areas were linked to the Public House at ground floor level however over time the use of the first floor for office and storage were not used and currently the Public House has stopped trading and remains empty.
“It is the applicant’s intention to bring the property back into use.
“No External changes are proposed.
“There are no proposals for adding car parking however the site is considered to offer excellent accessibility, being located within a Town Centre location and within close proximity public transport with a bus services adjacent to the site connecting the town centre and surrounding areas.

“The proposals represent a highly sustainable re‐use of an existing asset that will in turn contribute to the vitality of the wider town centre as a result of its contribution towards the (town centre) housing strategy.
“The accommodation would add to the supply of affordable property within the locality adding to the mix and balance of housing stock.”
