For patients recovering from life-changing spinal injuries, hospital stays can stretch for months, sometimes over 120 days.
That’s why MWL NHS Charity is launching a heartfelt appeal to raise £50,000 to transform the patient day room at the North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre, based at Southport Hospital.
This specialist centre, one of only eight in the UK, serves patients from across the North West, including Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, Cheshire, North Wales, and the Isle of Man.
With 41 inpatient beds and nearly 100 patients admitted each year, the centre is a lifeline for those navigating the long road to recovery.
But recovery involves more than just medicine, it requires an environment that nurtures physical rehabilitation, strong mental and emotional resilience and social connection. Patients have shared that the current day room feels outdated and clinical.

They long for a space where they can relax, spend time with loved ones, and feel more at home during their extended stay.
Victoria Burrows, Head of Charity at MWL NHS Charity said:
“We want to create a sanctuary. A warm, welcoming space that offers comfort and dignity, where patients can take a break from the clinical spaces of the unit to enjoy a cup of tea with family, or simply have a quiet moment to themselves.”

The charity is calling on the community to help make this vision a reality. Every donation, big or small, will help transform the day room into a brighter, more inclusive space for patients navigating the immense physical and emotional challenges of spinal injury recovery.
Together, we can help those who need it most.
