Southport MP Patrick Hurley has expressed his delight at today’s news of funding to enable the restoration and reopening of Southport Pier.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the creation of a new Growth Mission Fund to “expedite local projects that are important for growth but have been forgotten, such as Southport Pier, Kirkcaldy’s seafront and High Street, and a new sports quarter in Peterborough”.

Patrick Hurley, MP for Southport, is overjoyed to have secured government backing to restore the pier, which has been closed since December 2022.

The announcement, made today by the Chancellor, follows months of diligent work and conversations from Southport’s MP Patrick Hurley, who called the news “a turning point for our town.”

He said. “It’s taken a Labour MP, Labour councillors, a Labour regional mayor and a Labour government to get the job done – and now the work can begin.”

The pier will now benefit from a dedicated restoration package as part of the government’s new investment priorities.

Patrick Hurley said: “Rachel Reeves’ Spending Review shows exactly what a Labour government can do when it puts people and places first.

“This is about more than just rebuilding a pier – it’s about restoring pride, boosting the local economy, and welcoming visitors back to Southport’s seafront.

“This is the beginning of something bigger – restoring Southport’s national treasure, putting us back on the map for holiday makers.”
