Southport couple Jennifer and Andy Birch are determined to climb the equivalent of Mount Kilimanjaro in just 24 hours

A Southport couple determined to climb the equivalent of the highest mountain in Africa in just 24 hours are already two thirds of the way towards their target!

Jennifer and Andy Birch completed an impressive 1,000 ascents of ‘Mount Kilimanjaro’ yesterday (Thursday 6th April 2023) and have 500 left to compete today.

They have already raised £1,600 towards their £2,000 target and are asking people to donate via their JustGiving page here

A Marshside Primary School spokesperson said: “Wow, we are so in awe of you both! Doing it for Marshside Primary. Please share, retweet and help them smash their target. 500 to do in the morning!”

Jennifer and Andy Birch are taking on the challenge to raise money for Marshside Primary School in Southport, where Jennifer is a teacher.

Mount Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano located in Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania is the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level.

People are invited to donate via their JustGiving page here

Marshside Primary School has been shortlisted in the School Of The Year category in the 2023 Pride Of Sefton Awards, which takes place at The Grand in Southport on Friday 28th April.

Jennifer Birch said: “Can we climb Mount Kilimanjaro in 24 hours?

“We are attempting a real challenge! Andy and I will be attempting to climb the height of Kilimanjaro (that’s 6,000m!) in 24 hours. So that’s 1,500 routes at the Matchworks Climbing Hangar, across two days on 6th and 7th April 2023.

“We are raising money for Marshside Primary School to put towards the cost of books, swimming lessons, classroom resources, and other educational requirements that would enable the pupils to continue to thrive. Money previously allocated to these things is being spent on essentials such as heating and cleaning products, meaning no money for experiences and resources that all children deserve.

“The team at Marshside is one of the most caring and dedicated bunch that you could wish to have looking after your children.

“Like all educators, they work tirelessly to support pupils and families, making sure that opportunities are not missed, even if it means using their own money to enable them.

“The money that we raise will go directly to the school so they can buy essential resources and fund quality learning experiences.”
