Morrisons supermarket on Lord Street in Southport town centre has revealed expansion plans to provide a new ‘Market Kitchen’ offer for shoppers.

The store, previously occupied by Safeway, has submitted a planning application for the scheme to Sefton Council.

This extension (approximately 144m²) would house a new ‘Market Kitchen’ offer that would include varying selections of freshly made food for customers.

Market Kitchen, which has been introduced to other Morrisons supermarkets in the UK, Market Kitchen serves fresh and tasty food “prepared by chefs in store, cooked exactly how you like it and ready to eat now”.

The service covers breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The application says: “The project scheme is to provide a new extension to the North-East elevation of the existing Morrison’s supermarket retail facility already trading.

“The retail supermarket, car parking and petroleum facilities are currently trading within site just off Victoria Way which is outside the Heritage Conservation Area.

“The overall construction of the extension will be in keeping with surround veneer of the area and in keeping with the adjacent heritage site.

“The extension approximately 144m² will house the new Market Kitchen which will include a varying selection of food freshly made.

“The roof to the new extension and existing extension will need to be lowered to incorporate new plant above the new market kitchen.

“There are, overall, approximately 522 existing car parking spaces, 28 disabled, and 12 parent and toddle.

“The new extension will incur a loss of just one car parking space.

“The pick-up point will be relocated to the main entrance area.”
