A Military Muster Day, organised by the North Meols Family History Society, of Southport, will take place this Saturday, (16th May 2026).
The event will be officially declared open at 11am by Southport Town Crier Mr Kevin Ruane MBE.
The Military Muster Day, which finishes at 4pm, is free to attend and will be held at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Preston New Road, Southport, PR9 8QX.
Gladys Armstrong, who was until recently, the chair of the society said:
“Come along to discover if you are related to one of our local First or Second World War heroes. “There will be a display, of our research, into the lives of 58 military personnel, whose Commonwealth War Graves are all located locally.’’
The display will also include
- Mid Lancs Military Vehicle Trust with displays of old military vehicles kitted out for different uses (communications, first aid etc).
- Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which can also assist with finding deceased military personnel.
- Lathom Park Trust – with an interesting display especially for people who are familiar with War Horse the book / movie / show. Thousands of horses went through the remount station in Lathom near Burscough, so there will be a display and a talk given by a local historian.
- The Southport Family Search Centre will be open on the day and will include a display about Family Search and how it can be used to search for historical military records of ancestors.
- Ormskirk Heritage Hub
- Southport Hookers crochet group
Gladys said: ‘After the success of last year’s Military Muster Day, it’s back, by popular demand and it promises to be equally as interesting and exciting as last year’s event.
“Come one and all and enjoy a special day with us.’’
