Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram says “there’s a real sense of momentum building” building positive new developments after the announcement by the Government today that funding has been secured to restore and reopen Southport Pier.

It follows yesterday’s big news that the Town Hall gardens in Southport will be transformed into a beautiful new space through the wishes of the families of Elsie Dot Stancombe, Bebe King and Alice Dasilva Aguiar.

The £10million investment for that scheme will be funded through £5million from the Government plus £2.5million from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and £2.5million from Sefton Council.

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has also contributed £19.9million to the £73million new Marine Lake Events Centre which is currently under construction along £500,000 towards the £1.4million transformation of Southport Market into a new food, drink and events venue four years ago.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:

“Today’s announcement is great news for Southport – and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“I had some time with the Prime Minister during our meeting at Lancaster House to talk specifically about Southport, where he gave his word that he’d support the town, and it’s good to see him following through on this commitment – especially after the news yesterday about Town Hall Gardens.

“This hasn’t happened by chance. It’s the result of tireless work by people who’ve never stopped fighting for the town’s future. Sefton Council Leader Cllr Marion Atkinson and the town’s MP Patrick Hurley have helped lead the charge locally, and the community has shown real determination to see Southport thrive.

“With the Marine Lake Events Centre taking shape, our new trains better connecting our community, and new investment on the way, there’s a real sense of momentum building.

“We’ll keep doing our bit – and we’re ready to work with the government to make sure Southport gets the backing it’s long deserved.”
