Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (MWL) has today published its new Trust Strategy 2026–2031, setting out an ambitious plan to improve care, reduce health inequalities and deliver better outcomes for patients across the region.

At the heart of the strategy is the Trust’s vision of 5 Star Patient Care bringing together safety, high-quality care, efficient pathways, strong communication and modern systems to deliver an outstanding experience for all.

The strategy outlines how MWL will continue to build on its strong performance while responding to increasing demand and changing health needs. It focuses on delivering care closer to home, making better use of digital technology, and shifting towards prevention and early intervention.

Shaped by feedback from patients, staff and local communities, alongside national NHS priorities and advances in clinical practice and innovation, the strategy reflects the health challenges facing local people, including differences in life expectancy and levels of deprivation across St Helens, Knowsley, Southport, West Lancashire and Halton.

Chief Executive Rob Cooper said:

“Today marks an important step forward as we launch our new Trust Strategy for the next five years

At its heart is our vision to deliver 5 Star Patient Care for our communities. This strategy sets out how we will continue to improve, getting the basics right every day while building for the future.

Underpinned by our values of being Kind, Open and Inclusive, and our commitment to putting patients first, this strategy provides a strong foundation for the years ahead. Together, we will continue to deliver the high quality care our communities deserve.”

The strategy, available on the Trust’s website www.merseywestlancs.nhs.uk , sets out a clear direction for the next five years, with a strong focus on partnership working across the NHS, local authorities and the voluntary sector, alongside continued investment in innovation, workforce development and sustainable services.
