Line Of Duty fans struggling to find clues to the identity of ‘H’ or ‘The Fourth Man’ should have asked the real experts – students at Southport College.
The facility in Southport town centre runs a Forensic and Criminal Investigation course for school leavers aged 16-18, one of the few places in the North of England to do so.
Line Of Duty has become a real talking point among those on the course over the past few weeks as they enjoyed learning all the up-to-date techniques for tracking down criminals using even the tiniest of clues.
Students even have the use of mock crime facilities and learn to follow crime scene procedures and protocols whilst they identify and collect forensic evidence.
This is a really hands-on course with those enrolled able to enjoy time in the classroom as well as in mock situations such as road traffic collisions and fire investigations.
Their knowledge is boosted by regular visits from experts working in fields such as forensics, the police and law, as well as through examining real life cases.
Southport College is a leading provider of vocational courses for school leavers and adult learners, as well as offering expert Apprenticeship training and a wide range of Higher Education courses.
The Forensic and Criminal Investigation course is one of many which are designed to help to prepare students for a wide variety of careers.
People will have the chance to discover more at a Summer Open Day at Southport College – a real event, not a virtual one! – on Saturday, 26th June.
Course Leader Lynette Smith said: “TV programmes such as Line Of Duty and Sherlock really do seem to spark people’s interest in this subject.
“People love searching for clues and working out how and why things have happened.
“The students have been talking a lot about Line Of Duty over the past few weeks.
“We have been looking at the things in the series which are relevant to what they are learning.

“They also look closely at different historic cases too, such as the disappearance of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham and the OJ Simpson case, to name but a few. When a new case comes to light on the news, it’s picked up that day and we look at how the information is being presented to the public and we follow the case in our daily lessons.
“Our Forensic and Criminal Investigation course for school leavers 16-18 is really unique as not many colleges run it, especially not in our local area. We get students from all over travelling to us for the course, from places like West Lancashire, Liverpool and elsewhere.
“We are trying to get the word out on our course as best we can!
“We have our own crime scene room where the students will use what they have learnt in a mock crime scene. We teach out of three newly renovated labs.
“Our learners go on to university to study courses such as Forensic Psychology, Criminology, Policing and Law, there are lots of possibilities out there for them.
“Our students find that they are more than prepared once completing the course to study at university level. Some of our students have gone on to work for the national detective programme and counter terrorism, we also have students working in prison supporting criminal reform.
“It is a great course and gives the students lots of possibilities of what they can go on and do.”

Those who pass the course will gain a BTEC Extended Diploma in Forensic and Criminal Investigation.
Students enjoy learning in a variety of different and interesting ways.
Lynette Smith said: “The course is really fun and consists of lots of practicals!”
“We have a Crime Scene Room where we set up various scenes for the students to learn from. They study incidents including Road Traffic Collisions too.
“The course has been going for about 10 years but it is not very well known. We are trying to let more people know that it exists.
“We have recently set up an Instagram account, at: and a TikTok account forensicsouthportcollege showing our Alumni and the practical investigations that we do on the course. There are also links to the course prospectus and an application form. We’ll invite you for a course discussion with a member of the science team.
“We have an Open Day coming up at Southport College on Saturday, 26th June where all staff will be on site to talk about the course and all of our facilities will be open, including the crime scene.”
The course has seen students enjoy huge success over the 10 years it has been running.

Among the students who have benefitted from the opportunity is Elliott Campbell.
He said: “From the moment I attended an Open Evening here, I loved Southport College.
“The location is really good being in the town centre and here is the only place I’d seen that offers a forensics course.
“I have always wanted to work in the forensics industry so it was perfect for me.
“The modules on this course are great and allow you to explore the subject really well.
“The lessons are really interactive with lots of practical experiences.
“The course at Southport College teaches you about the subject and is an amazing starting point for university.”

Student Georgina Julieta said: “I initially planned to study science at A Level but a visit to the Southport College Open Evening changed my mind.
“The Forensic Science programme stood out against any competitors with modules that will aid me on my path to university.
“The staff have been very supportive, both academically and personally and the facilities are great especially the laboratories and the crime scene room.
“I want to work as a Crime Scene Officer in the police in the future and plan to study Forensic Science at Liverpool John Moores University.”
