Kokomo Coffee & Wine Bar in Southport

By Sophie Swain Stand Up For Southport

A bar in Southport town centre now boasts a classic new look thanks to investment from the owners and the Southport Townscape Heritage Project.

Kokomo Coffee & Wine Bar, situated on Bold Street, just off Lord Street, is described as an ‘independent local bar for local people’.

The outside has been undergoing renovations for the last six months in order to restore the building to how it looked before.

Owner, Kelly Carr said: “I am really pleased with the final outcome.

“It’s been long and arduous but we made it, and it does look beautiful.”

Kelly has been working closely with the heritage team and put ‘every penny’ into the revamp.

Despite building works taking six months, the whole process took 18 months due to negotiations and the great British weather.

Kelly explained how the bar’s loyal group of customers are also pleased with the new look, although have a few mixed feelings about losing the open windows and doors.

She wanted to thank all the tradespeople involved for their outstanding work, especially the talented Graham Booth who painted the new sign by hand; Andy Mc did all the structural work; Gary Houghton, the joiner who oversaw the project, and made the windows for upstairs and the entire shop front; along with their teams, and specialists in ironwork.

Graham Booth, from Southport, is a traditional sign writer who was commissioned by the team to create the new look in April.

Now the renovations are completely finished the bar is continuing to host its weekly live music nights on Saturdays and karaoke on Sundays.

It is among venues backed by the Southport Live Music Facebook page, with a ‘Live Music Venue Support’ poster in the window.

Kelly said: “We always love to support local artists and local people.”
