Students at KGV Sixth Form College in Southport had the chance to Boss It, either by going on placement with an employer or getting stuck into an exciting employer-led project.

A group of students who chose the employer-led project, got the chance to work with Gardiner & Theobald.

Gardiner & Theobald led a week-long project based on the £73 million Marine Lake Events Centre site in Southport, giving students a hands-on introduction to the construction industry.

MLEC is currently being built on the site of the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre, and will be a brand new events, exhibition and conference centre which is estimated to attract an additional 515,000 visitors a year and generate £18 million for the local economy.

KGV Students took on roles such as architect, project manager, and sustainability lead, working in teams to design a development proposal that considered real-world factors like budget, local community needs, and heritage constraints.

Midweek, they visited the site with support from Sefton Council and DSM to see the enabling works in progress, helping bring their project to life

On the Friday, students pitched their construction proposals to Gardiner & Theobald, wrapping up a week of hard work. Congrats to the winning team for their standout presentation!

Whichever route they chose, students gained a brilliant experience to add to their CVs or UCAS applications, along with a clearer picture of how their subjects connect to real career paths.
