GCSE, A-level and AS-level exams have been scrapped this year.

Teachers will instead help to decide which grades pupils will earn.

The move was confirmed during a statement by Education Secretary Gavin Williamson in Parliament this afternoon.

The exams were due to be held in May and June this year but will now be replaced by school-based assessments.

Sats exams for primary school children will also not be held this year.

Mr Williamson told MPs that schools must now provide between three and five hours of online lessons per day while they are closed until at least after February Half Term.

He said: “We have set out clear, legally binding requirements for schools to provide high-quality remote education. This is mandatory for all state-funded schools and will be enforced by Ofsted.

“We expect schools to provide between three and five hours teaching a day, depending on the child’s age. If parents feel their child’s school is not providing suitable remote education they should first raise their concerns with the teacher or headteacher and, failing that, report the matter to Ofsted.”

He said the details of how the teacher assessments would work were being ‘fine-turned’ along with Ofsted, exam boards and teaching unions.

Mr Williamson has also decided to leave what happens with BTEC exams up to schools and colleges.

Mr Williamson also said that a national voucher scheme will be in place so that all eligible children can access free school meals.

He told the Commons: “I know there is understandably concern about free school meals. We are going to provide extra funding to support schools to provide food parcels or meals to eligible children.

“Where schools cannot offer food parcels or use local solutions, we will ensure a national voucher scheme is in place so that every eligible child can access free school meals while their school remains closed.”
